Description

The company began as a mail-order supplier of radio transmitting parts for amateur radio operators and broadcasters. During the 1930s and World War II era, E. F. Johnson expanded into manufacturing electronic components and communications equipment.

Following World War II, the company became one of the leading American manufacturers of amateur radio transmitters. The Viking series, including models such as the Viking I, Viking II, Ranger, Valiant, Pacemaker, and Thunderbolt, became widely used by amateur operators throughout North America.

During the CB radio boom of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, E. F. Johnson produced the popular Messenger series of transceivers. The Johnson Messenger became one of the best-known American-made CB radios of its era and remains highly collectible today.

In later years, the company focused increasingly on land-mobile radio systems, trunked radio networks, digital radio technology, and public safety communications equipment.
